Adv Finals All-Skate
I’ll be honest, I didn’t need to make it to finals. When Kevin and I danced in prelims, I felt like we put everything out there on the floor and was pretty happy with how we danced. I was pretty excited to hear we made finals, but I was also a bit nervous because Kevin and I weren’t as prepared as we have been other years. Regardless, we decided if we made it into the final round by being ridiculous, we would keep up the shenanigans!
Kevin had one of the orange fingers under his sweater vest and around 0:58, Kevin yanks up his vest and let’s all of Baltimore see him in his glory. Like the great partner I am (*toot toot goes my horn), I figure the least I can do is continue to dance with the Baltimore Finger! The audience was loving it!! Well, maybe not everyone, but certainly the Baltimore section
I have to say, there was some really great stuff put on the floor that night. Skye & Frida were seamless as usual. I love watching Todd and Naomi dance together; she is such an amazing follow!! And Holy shit – Pontus and Isa’s aerial was ridiculous (2:12)! And the barrel turn into a Frankie done by Juan and Sharon….sick (3:50)! Pat yourselves on the back contestants, because you threw down. UH!!!
I like the combination that Kevin and I have during our first round out (3:06) but it would have been so much better to different music. Arrrg. AND I don’t particularly care for the shapes I’m making with my arms. AND….ok, so I could get super nit picky but I’ll save it for another time. However…….hahha, I will say, I’m pretty proud of Kevin and myself for crowd surfing Baltimore at 7:18. And by the way, Baltimore, I love you! Thanks for catching us!!!! Andrew Thigpen, sorry about straddling you while dismounting the crowd (or “you’re welcome” depending on how you feel about the whole thing). Baltimore, you made the weekend for me! xxoo
Yes, ESDC happened long enough ago that this might seem like odd timing for this post, but I don’t care. *smile Here are my favorites from Cabaret Division at the European Swing Dance Championships back in June 2011.
Pure, and utter ridiculousness. I so badly want to be in this routine. Oh, the energy!
Seriously, I think I’d be the tallest one in this routine. I don’t think I can say that I’ve ever been the tallest in anything I’ve done before.
The boys doing their Jazz thing:
I think I prefer the three boy version to the duo. Firstly, there are more boys to adore, but mainly I like the balance of the movement and shapes. Uh….all of them are so classy *grin
Kevin doing an awesome job with his hat trick routine:
I’ve been pretty slack about posting since being in Herrang (ok, and before that as well). Fortunately, I wrote a number of drafts while I was gone, so over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be posting them.
I had the very, very best time. I’ve attended Herrang 4 years in a row and every year my experience has improved. My first year was pretty crap; I went with a set of unfounded expectations about how things were going to be and was completely disappointed. I had heard so many stories about the wonderment of Herrang, but my experience in 2008 was nothing like the fairytale. During my last few days that year I finally decided I was going to let go of my expectations and just try and have a good time, and I did. Lucky enough for me, I was invited to teach the following year and I had a much better experience. Again, I was invited to teach Week 2 and Week 4 this year and I had one of the best summers ever.
How high the moon? Come and feel the weightlessness of universe and see how Mother Earth is looking at you from a far distance. Astronauts and aliens, galaxies and stars. Mysterious creatures from planets you never knew of. One spaceship is landing and another one is taking off. Get your oxygen mask and get ready for space. And if you listen carefully you might already now hear the barking from a lonely dog named Lajka.
This one was a lot harder for me to find photos that were inspiring, but here’s my best shot. What are your ideas?
I’m afraid I might throw in the towel on this one, but I’ll try to pull something together. Maybe something with tin foil…. any suggestions?
The great big blue is welcoming you into a world of colourful fishes, seaweed and old shipwrecks. Green, blue, yellow and purple! A well hidden coffin with golden coins is a red mark on the treasure map. Captain Nemo and his crew are heading to sea in the big submarine Nautilus. Mermaids, cods and sharks, come and help battling against the terrifying school of giant squids. And who knows you might be the lucky one, when the night comes the treasure might be yours!
Pretty straight forward, Gentlemen. Navy pants are clearly a must and it looks like a white turtle neck will get you pretty far this week! If you plan on getting dirty and don’t want to sully your top, a blue turtle neck with red piping and a matching cap will suffice. *smirk
Nothing says Nautical quite like a red & white striped shirt and navy pants. Am I right?!
I’ve already mentioned a white turtleneck, but extra points will be awarded to those wearing a ribbed one! And let’s not forget the beard. Seriously, Gentlemen, you either need to bring your chin (see image above) or grow a beard that says I Mean Business. Can’t wait to see what you guys draw on your face *smile*
Smoking jacket and organ anyone?
If everything else seems a bit trite, you can just bring your enormous octopus and your hull. Just sayin’….
Oh dear, oh dear, don´t be late for wonderland! Follow the white rabbit and you will find a world of wonders. The golden key might bring you through the rat-hole and into the most beautiful of gardens or maybe all the way into the Duchess smoky kitchen. Have a bowl of soup but be careful with the pepper! A baby is turning into a pig and the tyrant Queen of Hearts wants you to repaint her white roses into red. Mad tea parties and lawn croquet, my ears and whiskers, how good this party is going to be!
Whether the new one inspires you…
….or the classic one…
….there is a myriad of costumes that should inspire you.
The year is 1959 and Hawaii is becoming Americas 50th state. Tiki culture is at its peak and Hawaiian shirts, bamboo lounges and carved tiki´s are more popular than ever. Elvis is rattling his knees from one side to another in the army and “Mac the knife” is No.1 on the charts. Empty the brylcreem jar, pop your gum and come and get yourself a tropical fruit punch at the Herranga Tiki Bamboo Lounge. Aloha!
My favorite gal, Eleanor Powell, doing her thing in “Honolulu” (1939):
I planning on channeling my inner Eleanor; hopefully I’ll be able to do her justice. Here are some other images I’m going to draw from as well:
What’s your inspiration? What do you think you’re going to wear?
Way to represent Argentina!!! I’m so glad they decided to compete with this routine because for a brief period of time, I was under the impression they were going to back out. I’d like to think I talked them into it, but I’m sure they just remembered how awesome they were and then decided to kick some booty. Congratulations you two!!
2) Oskar Markusson & Mikaela Hellsten
Did you see that aerial at 1:45? Holy cow that was ridiculously awesome!! I love the dynamics between the two of them. They both have great shapes and line and I think they work really well as a partnership. This is one of the couples that I really enjoy watching; they are creative, shapely, have great taste in music, and they know how to make their shit look gooood.
1) William Mauvais & Maeva Truntzer
She’s a total stud; just look at her go! And did you see his face? Personally, I think William give the best “Face” in the lindy world. He’s such a character and I fucking adore it.
4) Aurelien Lesdos & Audrey Da Sois
Keep your eye on this couple because I am sure they are going to be the next big thing. Their energy, choreography ideas, and body shapes freaking rock my world. Truth be told, I couldn’t take my eyes off her when they danced! Fast forward to 1:58 and watch from there. DANG!!!
3) Ali Taghavi & Katja Uckermann
What a stunning dress! Honestly, I was studying her dress while she was dancing because I was so taken by it. Thank goodness for video; now I can see her and Ali’s great routine.
3) Nick Williams & Laura Keat
I ADORE Laura’s shapes. Seriously, all her shapes and poses and picturesque and sharp. Heheh, Laura told me she has a “Jo Moment” in the routine. Can you spot it?
2) Nicolas Deniau & Mikaela Hellsten
I saw this routine at Crazy Rhythm Challenge in France back in February. I loved it then and I love it even more now. Holy cow! Check out those splits! I’ve also decided that Mikaela is the real deal; she’s got the whole package. She can balance a regular dance partner and a boyfriend/dance partnership, she looks fantastic in red lipstick, her hair is always twisted in fabulous ways, and she really knows how to use her shapes and lines. Bad ass!
1) Dax hock & Sarah Breck
They are just freaking fantastic! Buwaaahahahhah, Dax in a fat suit! Can you image what the people at security must have thought when his bags were x-rayed at the airport? Hilarious. Oh yeah, and the dancing is tight
