Day 23 – Fishtail Braid

Another great hair tip from The Beauty Department! You know what, this actually makes me feel like I could do this. For some reason, I’ve been under the impression that a fishtail braid was harder than the rest. Silly me!

The hardest thing about doing a fishtail braid on yourself is getting it started. In this video, I’m giving you one of my favorite secret tricks… start with a clear elastic then cut it out at the end. By starting with a clear elastic at the top, you never have to worry about holding 4 confusing pieces together to get your braid going. You can just go straight into it!

Tools: 2 clear elastics, scissors, patience.

Steps:

For a smoother braid, brush your hair out first. For a messier braid, leave the natural texture and separate the hair with your fingers.
Create a ponytail using a clear elastic.
Split the ponytail into two separate pieces.
Take a piece from the first side and pass it to the 2nd side.
Next take a piece from the 2nd side and pass it back to the 1st side.
Once you’ve finished your braid, go in with your scissors and CAREFULLY cut the clear elastic at the top.
Optional: gently pull on the pieces to loosen it up if you wish!
When you’re fishtail braiding, don’t think too hard! You’re simply making X’s. Also, remember that when you take the little piece from one side and pass it to the other side, you don’t need to keep track of it.

Day 14 – Fun Bun

Another winner from The Beauty Department. What can I say, I love a good bun!

In a world where we can’t stop running late, the fun bun is probably the quickest way from A to Chic. This look comes in über-handy when you wake up late and you’re rushing out the door (or even if you have plenty of time). It’s such a high-brow/low-brow look. Meaning it can be paired with anything from jeans and a tank to a chiffon tiered dress. It’s amazing for the summer because some days when it’s really hot outside, all we want is to get that hair off our neck + shoulders! You can leave this plain & simple with no accessories, pair it with a headband or add a little sparkle by bobby-pinning in a jeweled brooch at the base. This works with ANY hair type from curly to frizzy to pin-straight. It’s also amazing for those days when you know your hair needs to be shampooed but you JUST DON’T WANNA! Spray some dry shampoo at the roots and follow the steps below. This is a more messy alternative to the ballerina bun…

Step 1: If your hair is straight, use a 1″ curling iron to curl everything under. This will make it easier to tuck pieces into the bun. When they’re straight, they tend to pop out more. If you have wave or curl you can skip this step if you want to.

Step 2: Flip your hair over and gather everything into a ponytail on top of you head, securing it with an elastic ponytail holder.

Step 3: On the last time around with the ponytail holder, only pull the ponytail through half way.

Step 4: Take the loop you’ve created and spread it out. Don’t over think it. Just widen it and allow it to be somewhat messy.

Step 5: Take the tail end and wrap it around the ponytail base.

Step 6: Pin the end of the ponytail to the base using a couple of hair pins/bobby pins.

Step 7: Gently pull on pieces and then pin them. This will give your top-knot a slightly more messy texture.

Step 8: Spray a veil of medium hold hairspray all over. Don’t smooth down all of the fly aways, just lightly tuck the pieces that have gone rogue!

Day 12 – Quick Twist

Today’s tutorial comes from The Beauty Department. This is an outstanding website that all of you ladies should know about.

My hair is too long to do it quite like this, so I’m working on a way to deal with the extra length. If you have long hair and have done something spiffy to make this work for you, leave a note in the comments or shoot me an email!

TOOLS: bobby pins, accessory, hairspray.

Prep: You’ll want the hair to have some texture before you pin it up. If you have curly hair, you’re all set. If not, use a 1″ spring iron and curl everything away from your face so it will twist easier. Then it’s just 2 steps!

Take the entire left side and start twisting near your ear. Best to twist it kind of tight and then loosen it up after you pin everything. Stop just past the middle and add a large bobby pin for extra support. You can see where we placed it in Katie’s hair. When inserting the bobby pin, go back against the hair, almost like you’re putting it inside the twist you just created!
Now gather all of the hair on the right, along with the hair left out from the other side and twist UP. Position it over the first twist and pin using a large bobby pin. Tuck the hair that’s left out into the twist and add a couple more bobby pins for security. If the hair is too short, just add an accessory!
Now using a hand mirror, check it out from the sides and back to make sure it’s well proportioned and balanced. Loosen it up with your fingers or pull some pieces out around your face if you want a more romantic vibe, then add a veil of hairspray.

Not feeling like this look is complete? Grab a feather or something with sparkles and put it in at the top of your twist!

Day 8 – Rihanna Inspired

The ever-so-fabulous Sarah Breck sent this to me and I thought it was worthy of a share. Thanks Sarah!!

I’ve been know to wear my hair in a similar style to this, and I think how I do it is much more simple; however, I think this looks more professionally done. Regardless, I think this looks smashing.

Send me a picture if you try this. Would love to see how it looks!

Going to Vegas Hair

I’m off to Vegas with some buddies and I’ve know for quite some time how I wanted to do my hair (thank you Febru-hairy! tutorials!)!
