Dirty Russians – the drink of Herrang

This summer Kevin and I spent a considerable amount of time, compared to every other year year, drinking at Herrang. Our drink of choice was what we so lovingly call the “Dirty Russian” which is a combination of vodka + hot sauce.

We first tasted this fiery deliciousness in while in Barcelona for ESDC. The description made us cringe for different reasons: Kevin doesn’t like to shoot vodka because it’s too strong and I’m not a fan of hot sauce because it’s too spicy. However, the combination of these two powerhouses is undeniably vaginal awesome.

Unfortunately we didn’t always have hot sauce on us when we were handing out vodka (like ya do *snap) so we had to ask around. Tim Collins was kind enough to let us use some of his habanero sauce and hotdiggitydamn that stuff is hot! And just so you know, after taking a shot with some habanero sauce, there was always some silt left at the bottom of the cup which naturally meant you had to take one more shot to clean the cup (and your sinuses).
ILHC, get ready to get dirty. :D

Drafts and Herrang Survey

Hi gang,

I’ve been pretty slack about posting since being in Herrang (ok, and before that as well). Fortunately, I wrote a number of drafts while I was gone, so over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be posting them.

Quick update about Herrang Dance Camp:

If you went, please take the survey so HDC can keep doing what you love and improve upon the other pieces. Please go here: http://www.herrang.com/herrang-2011-survey

I had the very, very best time. I’ve attended Herrang 4 years in a row and every year my experience has improved. My first year was pretty crap; I went with a set of unfounded expectations about how things were going to be and was completely disappointed. I had heard so many stories about the wonderment of Herrang, but my experience in 2008 was nothing like the fairytale. During my last few days that year I finally decided I was going to let go of my expectations and just try and have a good time, and I did. Lucky enough for me, I was invited to teach the following year and I had a much better experience. Again, I was invited to teach Week 2 and Week 4 this year and I had one of the best summers ever.

More on Herrang and the shenanigans to come!!

A Moon Odyssey

How high the moon? Come and feel the weightlessness of universe and see how Mother Earth is looking at you from a far distance. Astronauts and aliens, galaxies and stars. Mysterious creatures from planets you never knew of. One spaceship is landing and another one is taking off. Get your oxygen mask and get ready for space. And if you listen carefully you might already now hear the barking from a lonely dog named Lajka.

This one was a lot harder for me to find photos that were inspiring, but here’s my best shot. What are your ideas?

I’m afraid I might throw in the towel on this one, but I’ll try to pull something together. Maybe something with tin foil…. any suggestions?

Umbrella Inspiration

Here are some videos that I’m taking inspiration from for this week. What do you think we are up to out here in Herrang for Week 4?

No need to watch this one with sound, but the girls are awfully cute!

A few of us are putting together choreography for a jellyfish/umbrella number. Can’t wait to see how the choreography turns out!

20 000 Leagues Under the Sea

The great big blue is welcoming you into a world of colourful fishes, seaweed and old shipwrecks. Green, blue, yellow and purple! A well hidden coffin with golden coins is a red mark on the treasure map. Captain Nemo and his crew are heading to sea in the big submarine Nautilus. Mermaids, cods and sharks, come and help battling against the terrifying school of giant squids. And who knows you might be the lucky one, when the night comes the treasure might be yours!

Photo Inspiration

Pretty straight forward, Gentlemen. Navy pants are clearly a must and it looks like a white turtle neck will get you pretty far this week! If you plan on getting dirty and don’t want to sully your top, a blue turtle neck with red piping and a matching cap will suffice. *smirk

Nothing says Nautical quite like a red & white striped shirt and navy pants. Am I right?!

I’ve already mentioned a white turtleneck, but extra points will be awarded to those wearing a ribbed one! And let’s not forget the beard. Seriously, Gentlemen, you either need to bring your chin (see image above) or grow a beard that says I Mean Business. Can’t wait to see what you guys draw on your face *smile*

Smoking jacket and organ anyone?

If everything else seems a bit trite, you can just bring your enormous octopus and your hull. Just sayin’….

Wonders in Wonderland

Oh dear, oh dear, don´t be late for wonderland! Follow the white rabbit and you will find a world of wonders. The golden key might bring you through the rat-hole and into the most beautiful of gardens or maybe all the way into the Duchess smoky kitchen. Have a bowl of soup but be careful with the pepper! A baby is turning into a pig and the tyrant Queen of Hearts wants you to repaint her white roses into red. Mad tea parties and lawn croquet, my ears and whiskers, how good this party is going to be!

Whether the new one inspires you…

….or the classic one…

….there is a myriad of costumes that should inspire you.

Tiki Herräng

The year is 1959 and Hawaii is becoming Americas 50th state. Tiki culture is at its peak and Hawaiian shirts, bamboo lounges and carved tiki´s are more popular than ever. Elvis is rattling his knees from one side to another in the army and “Mac the knife” is No.1 on the charts. Empty the brylcreem jar, pop your gum and come and get yourself a tropical fruit punch at the Herranga Tiki Bamboo Lounge. Aloha!

My favorite gal, Eleanor Powell, doing her thing in “Honolulu” (1939):

I planning on channeling my inner Eleanor; hopefully I’ll be able to do her justice. Here are some other images I’m going to draw from as well:

What’s your inspiration? What do you think you’re going to wear?

Ksenia Parkhatskaya

This year at the Harlem 2011, they did their Solo Jazz Contest in “King of the Hill” fashion. Two contestants battle and at the end, the judge must choose a winner who continues to battle until the sweet end! This girl….she kills it.

Her name is Ksenia Parkhatskaya and she’s from St. Petersburg, Russia and she’s pretty freaking amazing. Check out those legs!! She didn’t win, but she threw down.

One more for good measures:

“A story about fragile soul made to be vulgarized and public….Once life have put mask on you only true Love can reveal genuine.” The music is OST La vie un Rosse/ La Mome – Lisieuz
Cabaret Night in Herrang week 5, 2010.

And check out her website! She’s got some great photos up like this one:

Photos by Nika Zhuk

Gaaah!! The best thing about this for me is that I’ve seen this photo a number of times, but never knew who it was. Until now. Ksenia, congratulations on a job well done at Harlem and I love your photos. You’re gorgeous!!

Summer Wheels

I recently found that I want a vintage bicycle, or something that can carry me from place to place in style. Haha, but where would I actually get to use this since I’m never home? Herrang!! Here are some fun pictures of bicycles that I recently found. Enjoy!!
