  2. Hair Fabulous

    May 24, 2010 by Jo

I want to do this with my hair!

    And this:

I do something like this already:

I’ve always wanted bangs but never had the guts to cut my hair. Luckily, I can still have “pin up bangs” and keep my hair the way it is!

What are some of your favorite hair videos? What has inspired you?

  3. Things that made me smile this week

    April 23, 2010 by Jo

Ok, so even though I am “trapped” in Europe, there are still a lot of great things about this trip.

    1. I am staying in a nice B&B where there is internet, my dance partner, and Juan & Sharon.
    2. We are within walking distance to a dance studio that has mirrors and sound systems in the various rooms, and there is time during the day we can use it.
    3. Because I have internet access, I have had the resources to work on my website. Yeah!!
    4. I found some great videos online:

Lin Yu Chun Sings Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’

Wow-e-wow-wow. This is made better by the fact that his hair is so awful! But man, what a voice!

Beyonce singing “At Last” for the Obama’s first dance.

This makes me proud to be an American. I showed this clip to Juan and I was in tears afterwards. Beyonce is wickedly talented, has a stunning voice, and is singing live for the US’ first black president. What an outstanding moment in history (and entertainment).

On a completely different note, the Best DUI Ever!

    With a hitch kick and a yee-haw!!

  4. Clazapoppin’

    April 22, 2010 by Jo

To truly appreciate this next clip, you will need to be familiar with the dance scene from Hellzapoppin and have some general idea about HOW much time this video must have taken to create. Enjoy and pass it on!!

Thank you Clay Animation Network for doing this. The Clay Animation Network (C.A.N.) is a traveling animation school based out of Seattle, WA. (and presently travels as far as Dallas, Texas). Students (of all ages) who take classes through C.A.N. work in teams to operate a digital camera, construct sets and characters, compose unique stories, and add sound.

  7. Time and Eternity

    July 25, 2009 by Jo

Gahhhhhhhhhh! We all thought the Herrang pick-up was at 9am and it’s actually 11am. Ug. Guh.

So now that I am up…. again (bemused and dismayed), here’s is what’s keeping me busy:

Wired Magazine – 10 Gadgets We’d like to get rid of

Wired Magazine -100 Things your kids may not know about Reading through this list is very interesting. Some things I don’t quite know about, and some things I’ve already seen go out of use. See what you think? Is there anything you’d add?

Time Magazine – Legalizing Marijuana in CA I think they should legalize marijuana. It is expensive to the tax payers to keep people in jail so having people in for something as small as possession or for smoking is silly. If cigarettes and other tobacco products are legals the pot should be too. Perhaps driving under the influence restrictions can be placed on smoking pot….

Time Magazine – Cigarettes in Africa – I like the idea that only about 20% of American’s smoke, but it’s scary to think how many countries are lighting up and how young some of the kids are.

All the while I am reading, Flight of the Conchords are playing in the background. Here’s a visual preview of them being glorious:

Hmm…..is this what I would do with eternity? Assuming I had internet access while living out eternity, is this a preview of what I’d do? What would you do with eternity and an internet connection?

  8. Camp Jitterbug 2009

    June 1, 2009 by Jo

What an AWESOME time I had this year!!!! But what a surprise, since I have a great time every year I’ve gone.

Something that was different for me this year than previous years was that I wasn’t a main instructor, meaning I had very few responsibilities. I can’t begin to tell you how awesome that is!! It was great to be apart of the CJ team, but it was a real treat to get to feel like a camper as well. Moving along……Kevin and I taught two classes: “The Follow Goes Round and Round” (we got to do a bunch of technique in the class, and I did the entire class wearing a corset) and an aerial class where we taught the backpack and the crunch toss. The students in the aerial class were some of the best we’ve worked with. What great enthusiasm they had and how well they all went over. :-D

I must note that the facilities were ridiculously gorgeous. The Century Ballroom is even nicer than I remember it to be; I presume there have been renovations. Kevin and I decided we must own that building (what a surprise…we do that everywhere we go) and picked out where our bedrooms would be and where dance classes would take place. Amazing!!! We’d also take Privya (or whatever the name is) and that entire building. Man, that was a sweet place as well.

Ok, so here is some background which will help piece the rest of this weekend together. The intermingled part of the Killer Dillers (Kevin & Sharon, Juan & me) stayed at my parents place which was totally pimped out. My parents (horn tooting-time) pimped us out royally. We had a car and a Vespa to drive, each couple had their own bedroom, the shower is WAY nicer than the one we have at Hoodstock, there was food in the refrigerator, my mum cooked and my dad made me and Sharon Manhattans. They fucking rock, there is just no two-ways about it. Some other highlights: we ate at Umi Sake House, we had Mighty-O donuts, Juan and Sharon made it to the Charleston Finals and took 3rd in the Lindy Hop competition, and Kevin and I took first in the lindy hop competition.

Here’s the video of the Lindy Competition:

The highlight of the weekend was the surprise Single Ladies performance by Bethany Powell, Stacia Martin, Karen Turman. I saw them rehearsing in the bathroom before they went out and it was honestly a bit too much for me to handle….they were far too fierce for the space they were in….thank god they performed on a large floor!! Here’s there performance. Watch and think amazed thoughts:

    Yeah. Seriously. Wow!

Ooooh, and I almost forgot, the Jump Session Show!! I threw canes to Nathan for his Fascinating Rhythm routine with Kevin and Juan (and unfortunately threw some wild one’s…..cringe), dressed up like a hick for Andrew and Karen’s Howdown routine, and performed “Puttin’ on the Ritz” with Sharon.

All in all, I had an awesome freaking weekend. I saw my parents and caught up with my West Coast friends, had some brilliant social dances, ate good food, performed in a great show, and won the lindy hop couples contest. Sweet.

  10. Awesome moments in Lindy Hop

    November 11, 2008 by admin

This past weekend I was at Followlogie in Quebec, Canada and during the lunch time Q&A session we were asked what was a great moment in lindy hop for us. It was such a good question that I am going to put my answers here, on hopefully find some links to them.

My awards, in no particular order:

Greatest all-skate of my life time:
    - ULHS 2005 – Fast Dance contest. After all the competitors had danced in their heats, there was the greatest all-skate of all time. While balancing on a chair, smushed against the wall, I watched in awe as the 30 couples on the floor swung out to “Jumping at the Woodside” as hard as they could. Not only that, but the audience clapped on beat!! And it was the most amazing thing I had seen to that day.

Greatest swing outs in a jam:
    - Camp Hollywood 2008 – Strictly lindy hop finals – Mikey Pedroza and Nina Gilkenson. They were the only couple that made it to finals that weren’t regular partners and they still threw down. We, the competitors, slowly realized that all we were seeing were swingout, and they just kept going. It was an awesome build-up with an even better finish. They went all the way.  Now watch it.

    Greatest Aerial-prop moment:
    - ILHC 2008 – Showcase Division – Max & Annie. Kevin and I were the first to put the Flying Lotus on the competition dance floor, and Max & Annie were the first to take it to the next level. It was so fucking badass; their height, their timing, and their ingenuity floored me. My god, are they good.

    Greatest all-time moment:
    - ILHC 2008 – Junior Division. I cried. The audience cried. We all lost it. For me, this was the first moment that I knew there would be a future for lindy hop. These little guys give me hope that the thing I hold so close and dear to my heart will continue to grow. Watch, enjoy, and cherish the moment.
